Hi,

To start an X-Windows session from the command line, simply type 'startx'.
That will work IF everything is configured right.

This might imply you have no working X-server configuration. Are you able to log in as root and start X with the command 'X' <enter>? (kill it with ctrl+alt+backspace) If so, here's a list of things to check:

- Have you installed a display manager? (gdm, kdm or xdm)
- Does init know you want to start X in runlevel 5? (last lines of /etc/inittab)
- I'm not that familiar with Mandrake, but RedHat has a
Preferred Windowmanager option which also tells what display manager to start.
This can be changed somwhere in /etc/sysconfig/

Good luck!

Hi,

thanks to both for your replied.
When I run startx, I get some errors-
-------------------
(**) FontPath set to "unix/:-1"

Fatal server error:
open_framebuffer: failed to open /dev/fb0 (No such device)

X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).
-------------------
I have set init ro run level 5. It seems to try to bring up the X-windows login, but reverts to the non-x login. Then it evens reverts to run level 3 !
I wonder whats hapenning?

I appreciate your help,
thank you.

Don't run the frambuffer server, run XF86Setup, xf86cfg, or X -configure.

The reason I give you three options is cause I'm not sure which one to use, they've all been in use at one point or another, it's been like 2 years since I've used X windows. One of them will work though.

Try using just the standard XF86_SVGA, which you'll see when you run one of the above commands.
