okay im running red hat right now and when ever i reboot it goes streight to the terminal and i cant get out ive tried [ctrl]-[alt]-[f7] but i dosent work it just asks for a user name and i really dont know what to do..........

Hi,

Please try and include as much information as possible when asking for help.

Let's start from the beginning, what happens when you load into Linux? Do you get to a shell prompt that looks something like this:

(black screen)

Red Hat Linux Release 9
Kernel 2.4.20-19.9 (tty1)

login:

If so, that is the command prompt/console/terminal/shell etc. Simply log in as the user you created during the install. If you didn't create a user (you should have created one), then log in as root. Type in root for the username and enter in the password you used during the install.

Once logged in type startx and it should take you to the desktop.
