Full Version: Unusual mode?
Linuxhelp > Support > Technical Support

So last night before I went home my second machine (a desktop I use to run Linux) went into a mode I haven't seen before.
The screen went black and a Unix prompt started as if the whole screen was now a terminal window wanting me to login.
I can see from exceed and remote login that the stuff I was using is still there on the machine...

How do I get back to the normal screen?

What distribution/version are you running?

The desktop is just a program(s) running on top of the operating system. If the x server has crashed for some reason you can try restarting by just typing in the command
startx. If it will not start post the error messages.

FYI, the system creates 6 virtual terminals (ttys) that you can switch by typing alt-f1 to alt-f6 if the desktop is not running. The x server/desktop runs on tty7 but it is possible to run multiple desktops on ttys 8-12.
