Well, i just got linux, and i was wondering how do you switch back to windows. I know windows is still on the comp, But i need to know how to get to it
Joey
What bootloader are you using? Did you add windows as a boot option when you installed linux? Do you have a windows boot disk/installation cdrom?
zero2000
uh, i dunno, my brother downloaded linux, Mandrake linux 9.1, and we used to have windows xp
Joey
what happens when you turn on your computer now. What do you see after the bios loads. Does it give you an option to boot into linux, windows etc.

Maybe you should be asking your brother what he did..
zero2000
Well, my brother is a asshole, he downloaded linux when we didnt tell him to

When i turn on the computer, there is no option to go to windows, Just the log in screen
Joey
so how do you know that windows xp is still on the computer?
zero2000
Well, atleast were pretty sure it is on the comp, Because we didnt do anything to it, and during the installation of linux, it never said deleting windows, or anything like that< i mean, it's gotta be on the comp still.
Joey
boot off your xp installation cd and go into rescue mode or whatever it is called and type fixmbr at the command prompt. that will kill the linux bootloader and reinstall the xp/windows one.

edit - if you still want to keep linux on the computer and have both xp and linux then you'll want to either create a book disk to load linux or boot into linux and edit the boot loader to allow you to select what OS you want after the bios runs
Corey
That would be funny if linux actually said "Now deleting Windows...."

something like when you go to install Windows 9x when you have linux installed it tells you that your system has a virus. Quite funny.

I dont want to install xp again,a nd start all over, and have to install all the programs before, lose all my stuff i had, grrrrr
Joey
who said anything about reinstalling?
Corey
you just need to boot off of the installation cd so you are able to fix your MBR (Master Boot Record) so when you're computer starts, it won't run the program that boots into linux. If you do that, then your system will boot right into Windows XP, provided that it wasn't overwritten when your brother installed Linux.
