Full Version: Host name question?

I am a newbie to Linux. I am working on an embedded Linux product and I have a question about the Host name. The system I am building can have multiple devices on the same subnet. If all of the devices have the same Host Name, will this create a problem on the network? They will have unique IP address, generally using DHCP with a reservation, but my current plan is to build the OS from the same image which will result in the same host name for each device. These devices will sit primarily on a Windows network.

I am running Debian 3.2.x if that makes a difference.

Thanks for any input on this.

Without knowing anything about what services are running on your network I can not for sure but most likely not a problem. The DHCP client can send a hostname if so configured as well as samba using the host name as a default smb netbios name.

Thanks for the response. Since the services would be running on customers servers, we won't know that information either. I guess I will setup a few devices on our local network and see if anyone complains!
