Full Version: mounting a usb HDD
Linuxhelp > Support > Hardware Support
Of course it needs formatting - but how do I achieve that in Suse 12:2?

It shows up as a new volume in Linux and is correctly identified in Win7 (on a laptop).

Typically USB hard drives come already formatted as NTFS. It appears to be recognized in both OSs so if you want to use it for both OSs then no changes are required.

If you prefer to format it just for linux then you can use the mkfs utilities with any desired file system like ext3. Make sure you use the correct device ID for the USB drive or you could erase existing data.
