Joey:

read changes section. i posted updated info there
Joey
looks good i thnk you have a blank entry in there though. go to the main page and hit refresh a couple of times.
chrisw
its there on purpose for now....because i deleted an entry so to see if the randomization would still work...i think i realized after the fact...why it wouldnt work before....there were an error in the code you wrote possibley..not 100% sure though...but any...i select the all rows from the table...use the rand() function in php to generate a random number...then select the appropriate tip from the number selected...the thing is...if you delete a row and that number show up and there is no tip for it...then thats when it generates no output....im working on a fix for that....the way it works now was a quick fix...to get it working....i fix the blank problem in a few days

but there is not blank entry in the table
Joey
sounds good. you can just rename the IDs if you want

Hiya.

"I was thinking that instead of having questions and appropriate solutions that vary on how good they are rated. Having a list of what the solution is and the question and a PAQ number, this would aid looking for specific topics because you have a look at the list of what the paq's are, maybe a different page that displays more info on the paq. The paq's would be closed so only admin can edit them (save restarting a closed topic, and changing the numerical order) and the paqs would be stored in reverse numerical order."

From the PAQs suggestion topic.

If you did it like a forum then the important topics could be a) a list of PAQ's that was updated whenever a PAQ was added (admin only) and b, a general chat topic, admin would could remove old messages.

I would love to help organise the PAQ's page when I come back from my travells (in a month) and it would be a good use of my non-skilled time freeing up the skilled people.

Anyway, your site is the best linux help site i've found, and has a brilliant response rate, so keep up the great work and I hope that I can help more when I come back.

Hay Joey, just in case you didnt' know, there seems to be an error on the "Security Advisories" forum showing that there is 77 topics but when you click through to see em you get . . . .

"No topics were found. This is either because there are no topics in this forum, or the topics are older than the current age cut-off."

Joey
We need all the help we can get. If you want to help out with the PAQ that would be awesome. I'll look into the security advisories thanks.
Joey
It's because they are so old. Change the date on the forum when you click on it and it should bring them up. It will go away once I post a new advisory.
Joey
So I was thinking that i wanted to put a news section back up on the main page but in reality its much easier to simply add a new catagory to the forum for news and it would probably work a lot better since you can search and comment on it etc.

Anyhow, any suggestions for what to do with the main page?
Jay-Jay
Joey, I don't mind managing the PAQ's page, however i mite need some higher rights to that forum (alone?!?!) so that I can write the thread and close it so's no one will change it, and so i can edit it once closed etc etc.

I'm happy to start when I come back from my trip abroad on the w'end starting the 26th July. I mite be able to start a little earlier, but I'm not 100% sure when I'll get back to a decent internet access.

Jay-Jay
Joey
email me when you get back (joey@linuxhelp.ca) and I'll hook you up with all the access you need. (and maybe a little more) smile.gif
Jay-Jay
Will do!

Have a great month while i'm away!

Oh just a quick question, I don't know how much you like my suggestions but heres another one.

I've been following up a couple of recent threads by e-mail. When you send the e-mail it goes to a groovy window that says your mails been sent, and then it's a bummer because the only way that you can get back to where you were is to hit the "linux help forums" link, topish left and then find your way back to where you were before.

Just wondering if theres a line of code that you could slip into the CGI which takes you back to where you were before, maybe done on a time thing, say 5secs on that page and then it auto directs you back to where you were before. (I'm not a programmer (wish I was, just about mastered xhtml moving onto C++ and java next . . . ) so I don't know how possible this is).

Jay-Jay

P.s. i just noticed that when you've edited a post like this one (once you made it then edit it) it does what i'm kinda suggesting!
