Hello everybody, I am fairly new to the world of Linux, and already well hooked.

Have got myself into a bit of a pickle with my laptop, which up until I recently attempted a software update was running Fedora 17 perfectly.

Following my attempt at a general software update, my system hangs up at the early stage of the boot up process, and advises me of a number of bewildering scary messages, headed with:-

"MP BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC"

followed by:-

"Kernel panic - not syncing :VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)"

That is followed by twelve lines of alpha numeric code, each line of which is prefaced with these numbers in square brackets:-

"[1.115006]"

(Quotation marks are mine)

I don't want to reinstall the OS, I had it running just right before this happened.

Any of you guys who are all much cleverer than me got any suggestions please?

Thanks in advance.
