Hi all!
I've been following this guide: http://www.bit-tech.net/bits/2007/06/05/bu...ur_own_server/1 The guide describes in fair detail how to build a Xubuntu server from scratch. Every step of the way I have been hitting many frustrating problems, enough so as to make the process entirely unenjoyable. If you guys could help with any of these issues I would be extremely grateful: 1) Right now the machine has a monitor, keyboard, mouse all hooked up temporarily. I aim to have these removed asap so the server is just a standalone box. I can just about control it via SSH or VNC without problems, however when the server is inactive for a while and the monitor turns off I lose my connection. I assume the server has decided to go to sleep or something similar, but my power settings are set so it will never go to sleep. What is going on here? 2) I want the machine to log in with my user account automatically, however the login screen settings are completely greyed out and I can't unlock them. 3) Part of the samba install tutorial involves modifying a config file (specifically /etc/samba/smb.conf). I can't modify it normally, apparently I don't have permissions, so I "sudo su" and try again. Attempting to open the file results in: "Gtk-WARNING**: cannot open display: 0.0" I have done some googling and nothing seems to be helping. Do you guys have any suggestions for me? Thanks |
