Hi a friend of mine has a 500gb usb Hard drive, which has lost a large amount of files. Is there any good file recovery programs I could use in Ubuntu / Linux to get these back, I have not written anything to the hard drive since.

Preferably a program which restores files to the same position on the disk as the original as I have no space on local Hard drive to copy the files to so the Hard drive its self is the only option I have to restore the files to.

Not too sure how the files were wiped in the first place, my friend said he plugged in into someone elses XP computer and when it booted it seemed to scan the hard drive and delete the files.. very weird.

Thanks in advance

You can try testdisk or maybe photorec.
