I installed ubuntu 8.10 in my Vaio VGN CR220E, the card is Intel GM965 and also when I tried
:~$ compiz --replace

I got
Checking for Xgl: not present.
No whitelisted driver found
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity

Can somebody help me please.

You may need to enable a restricted driver to turn on Hardware Acceleration, if GLX extensions are missing then the current driver doesn't support it. Ubuntu should have a Restricted Driver Manager under your System Menu in gnome. The driver may be listed there and just needs to be selected to enable. You can also try running sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg which will reconfigure X again.
