I am a 'returning' Linux user. I -used- to have a few clues how to use it, but that was years ago (RH 5,2 or so).
Apparently I have downloaded and installed one package too many.

No matter which program I try to download / install, I get this error message:
Could not connect to localhost:4001 (127.0.0.1). - connect (111 Connection refused)

Trying to find it on my own is probably not going to happen:
bill@ubuntu:~$ sudo locate localhost:4001 / -c
249987

I've removed tor, awfful and privoxy (recent additions, ISTR). But the bugger is still with me.

Any clues? This stopped being funny about 3 days ago.

What is awfful? My first guess is it could be a a privoxy problem. I am not familar with privoxy but its default port is 8118 not 4001 but that does not mean much.
Your web browser could be configured to use a proxy but since you uninstalled privoxy it is not working. Look at the settings and disable any proxy configurations.
