Whats this Lie-nix Thing?

Hi, I' new to Linux and I need help setting up my sound card. I used the hardware test and no sound came out of my speakers. Help please?

I should of also asked for the hardware specifications i.e. motherboard or computer manufacture. Ubuntu AFAIK uses alsa.
The first thing I would try would be verify the mixer volume is adjusted properly and the speaker is not muted via the mixer (alsamixer)
