I just bought an Acer Aspire One with Windows XP. I want to dual boot this with Linux. This netbook does not have a floppy, cd or DVD drive. Is it possible to boot from an external DVD drive or a flash drive? I don't want to buy an external dvd drive if I can't boot from it.

I am not real familiar with netbooks but I believe it is possible to boot from a USB device including flash drives.
Also check it pen drive linux. You can run linux from windows as a virtual OS. There are also live USB linux distributions.

Due to flash memory being limited in the number of write cycles a standard linux distribution may shorten its life due to journaling and swap.
