Whats this Lie-nix Thing?

I am student taking a college course where we have to do some basic linux commands. The instructor has been intentionally vague and told us to hunt down our answers across internet message boards.

I use Putty to telnet into this, so all I have is a prompt to type from.

I am supposed to edit my bash file using pico. I understand how to get into pico, I dont understand how to properly edit the bash file.

I am supposed to add commands for the following which i think will be aliases.

display contents of a directory = mycd
display date and time = mydt
logoff = myexit

So my question is how do I open this file with Pico, what is the proper syntax to do this, and what bash file do I use? I am able to see the following bash files .bash_history, .bash_logout, .bash_profile, .bashrc.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
