Manually mounting USB drive (SLED10.2) Options

Hi,

I want to create a hard drive image for my laptop. So, I booted into single-user mode, logged in, and plugged in an external hard drive, intending to unmount / and dd it. I then did modprobe usb_storage and got, among other things (no errors):
sd 2:0:0:0: Attached scsi disk sdb

And yet, there is no /dev/sdb, so I can't mount the drive:S. Am I forgetting something really obvious here? The relevant device nodes should be created automatically, right?

Make sure scsi_mod and sd_mod modules are also being loaded. Have you looked at the output of dmesg. You should see some messages like the following in addition to the one you posted.
SCSI device sda: 156301488 512-byte hdwr sectors (80026 MB)
sda: Write Protect is off
sda: Mode Sense: 03 00 00 00
sda: assuming drive cache: write through
SCSI device sda: 156301488 512-byte hdwr sectors (80026 MB)
sda: Write Protect is off

sda: assuming drive cache: write through
sda: sda1

You will not be able to unmount /. There are many files that are opened and system is constantly writing to log files etc. I would suggest using a liveCD. dd will copy everything including empty sectors.
