A question that's probably been asked a thousand times!

I'm trying to get a Media Centre PC up and running under Linux as the Vista platform supplied seems to be less than up to the job! For some time I've been working with SuSE Linux, but the one thing I've found with this distro is that multimedia apps don't work very well or at all because Novell chose to exclude many of the neccessary codecs. For example, as distributed, you can't even play DVD's.

It was suggested to e that Ubuntu would be most suitable as a multimedia platform, so I tried this out, but found some difficulties. For example, there is a known issue with the saa7134-alsa driver which prevents sound from working properly. The display will often not wake from hybernation and the system will often freeze on re-start neccessitatins the use of th power button.

The question then is which distro to try next? I was thinking about Debian from which Ubuntu is derived, but will this have the same problems? What about Mandriva or Gentoo?

Is there any particular distro that is particularly well suited to run multimedia apps?

John.
