Hello.

This may seem like a stupid question and I feel stupid for asking it but how do I log onto the root user?

I'm using Ubuntu and I don't seem to be able to do anything with any programs because to do that you have be logged in as root, but when I tried logging in root on the main login page it said "System Administrator is not allowed to log in from this page"...

Yes I am n00b. Help me please!

Am I missing something that's blatantly obvious?!?!

Ubuntu does not permit root login by default. See the link for more details.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo

You can enable root login:
Go to System -> Administration -> Login Screen Setup
You will be prompted for your password (user password for sudo)
Under the Security tab in the Setup GUI, check 'Allow root to login with GDM'
After you have done this, log out of your account and log in as root with tthe username 'root' (obviously) and the password you had created for the root account.

The other thing you can do until you apply Michael's fix (above) is when you're logged into a shell as a normal user just try "su" and become the superuser that way.

As explained in the link su does not work either. The prefered method would be sudo.

I kind of like the Ubuntu idea of not setting a root password. If you require an interactive shell as root (so you don't have to keep typing sudo during a session), you can log in as your regular use, and type

QUOTE
sudo -i

This will open up a root shell that you will be able to execute commands as root without the need of 'sudo' until you log out.
