please help i would like to know what is the best linux operating system for a new user as i am new to linux i have run windows 98 2000 xp and now have a laptop that has vista (lucky me) i know a bit about computers but nothing about linux and would love to try it and get rid of microsofts ram hungry software so any advice would be great

the spec for the computer i would like to put linux on

oh and will linux support sata drives as the laptop has this installed as you will see by the spec

There are many linux distributions and you can get a feeling for whats out there by going to www.distrowatch.com. I suggest trying out some live
CD versions and the install the one you like the most. A good one to start off with is Ubuntu. A liveCD is linux OS that basically runs from RAM and
CD at the same time. Your hard drive is not modified.

All of the recent linux distributions support SATA so no worries. You can search the web for linux on laptops, tuxmobile. It will give you an idea of
what people are running and what works on different laptops.
