Whats this Lie-nix Thing?

I downloaded and installed ymessenger with no problems using mozilla. I did make it start up on login and now I want to edit my startup file (where is it?) so it won't. I also want to add it as a GUI on my desktop (how?). Along the same lines, how do I add/delete programs at the console level. I am new at using unix/linux on a deskktop (I am using SuSE 8.0), but I am very familiar with the Irix vi on a server.

Along the same lines, I cannot get chat to open (java applet) properly. In Mozilla it is truncated, i.e. very small, and in Konqueror it is a blank screen showing me online. Java is enabled.

All suggestions are appreciated.
