Hello World.......coming at ya from Ohio...thanks for reading....

Have installed Ubuntu on an older PC...my secondary one that is. Installed just fine, got Compiz and all the effects, including Skydomes, 3-D transparent cubes, etc...all to work.....Very Impressive!

Downloading packages is quick and easy...very cool OS indeed, and I like it's not from a Multi-Billion dollar corporation.

If we decide to go 100% Linux.....couple quick questions....Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated, and the Linux community is very helpful..thank you all for that!

1.) Is there a version or equal, and does it work as well, Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger for online chatting? We use both now.

2.) Wine and Cadega work pretty good? I do like my Windows games like Heroes Might Magic V and Visual Pinballs, etc, etc.

3.) Any need for ANtiVirus? Spyware/malware a problem? This would be BIG reason to switch away from Windows...ugh.

4.) Good support for DVD copying (my own for backups of course!)...and Limewire? These are asked to obtain totally legal files of course! )

That's enough for one post...I know, I know.....THANKS Everyone!

Very Happy to start becoming part of this scene.......makes messing around with computers fun again, like in the old days!

Thanks,
Brian.

If you use P2P then other users can see your IP address - But that is the same with any communication across the internet (this forum stores your IP address, although it is not visible to most users). That would hold true for any file, not just certain ones. An IP address can be used to subpoena your ISP for your information. Linux will not stop that.

You generally won't need to worry about Spyware - Nobody makes Spyware for Linux, there isn't much money in it.
