Hello all, and thanks for reading....

First off, I have tried burning every ISO out there, including the latest versions of Ubuntu, Fedora, Knoppix, etc, etc.
I have used several different CD/DVD burning programs, like Nero, Alcohol, InfraRecorder, BurnCCCD, etc, etc.
I have burned using different speeds, DAO, SAO, blah, blah.......ugh

Well, just spent 16.00 freakin bucks on a Linux mag...has Ubuntu and other programs on DVD...ok....does it work? NOPE!

It always hangs after it looks like its loading....about 3 1/2 of those little yello bar segments. Everytime......and no other distro I burned work either...they always error or freeze.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated, as I am very interested in learning Linux.

My PC....

HP Pavilion a1110n
512M
Geforce4 MX4000 with 128M and the latest nVidia drivers available....have the on board video disabled.

Thanks everyone!

Brian.

Hi Brian. When booting the disks often times you can hit CTRL/ALT/F1 -6 to get into a virtual terminal and see what's going on in the background, assuming you get that far. It may provide some insight into what the delay or problem is. Also, there's usually a bunch of command line options that you can pass to the loader when you actually boot the disks. Wish I could be more specific, but most of the disks don't just boot and go, they present some sort of menu that allows you to make a few choices. It's at this point where you can also use the command line to install and that's where you would enter the arguments.

Yes, I tried the verbose mode on some.....usually not work. Some distros like Knoppix always mess up around the Hotplug /udev area of booting.....not sure about all this, but I have tried the "no" commands, such as nodma, etc, etc that I have read online at various websites.

At another forum, someone showed me a link that states HP BIOS is on the harddrive, it's by Pheonix and is a trusted/protected BIOS that will not let your PC boot to anything else.
What kind of crap is that?!?!?

I could, and did download, VMware PLayer to use various Linux distro appliances, but have not tried yet. I only have 512M Ram, anad using those really eats up all resources to run underneath VM......is this correct?

Thank you,
Brian.

One other question.....Some of those distros did work on the other PC, and that's and older AMD 1700, 256M, etc,etc....so I know those CD's are good.

I may just build myself aanother PC just for Linux.

It would have AMD 1700 Athlon, Geforce4 MX440 AGP w/64M, 256 to 512 Ram PC2100, etc. Is this powerful enough to run Ubuntu, with Compiz, XGL, and all those other goodies I see people using....flipping 3-D desktops around and such?

If that's the case with the bios I'd throw the thing out the window and tell HP that I'll never but another of their products. Sounds like the other computer should be able to do everything you want it to do. Seems that the biggest issue would be making sure that there is enough system memory and video memory. so maybe think about a better video card and at least 512MB ram.

That's pretty much what I was thinking......1G Ram and maybe a newer AGP 8X Card would be good, and I could also use it in the future when I upgrade the CPU, etc, etc.
Thanks for your input, appreciated.

Have you looked around in the BIOS settings? "Trusted" hardware can normally be turned off (at least it can at the moment) - Failing that, try unplugging the hard disk and see if you can boot a live CD. Not sure you G/Card is up to Compiz though - GeForce4MX is not as powerful as a normal GeForce 4.
