Hello all, sorry if this seems very lazy, but I've never used Linux and literally spent days researching this, so I'm getting a bit desperate...

I am thinking of buying a computer and install Linux on it - some work may be done in Linux, but most of all I am going to run various languages and flavors of WinXP in VMs on it (already doing this on an iMac with Parallels). Of course, the host OS could also be XP, but I have the impression that some Linux distros would be faster and more stable - plus I'd like to try out Linux, too!

Anyway, the computer I am trying to find out compatibility info for has these components:

Motherboard: GF7050V
CPU: Intel Quad Core Q6600 2.4G
RAM: PC2-5300
GPU: GeForce 8600 GT
HDD: Samsung Sata2
ODD: Samsung DVD-Supermulti Lightscribe

I'd be really grateful if anyone could tell me any positive or negative experiences with these components and various Linux distros.
I am thinking of a 'buntu flavor (Ubuntu or Kubuntu), but really don't know what I'm talking about here, so whatever works!

Thanks!

Thank you for the response! In the mean time, I have seen others using at least the same processor to run Fedora as well as OpenSUSE 10.3.
The memory is two sticks of 1 GB each.

I just wanted to check before I buy the computer, which comes OS-less, but it seems it's pretty safe.
