Whats this Lie-nix Thing?

I just recently installed Redhat 8 on a friends computer, who is connected to the internet though just a cable modem and his ethernet card (if that has anything to do with it), and whenever I logon to GNOME using any screen name it comes up with the error:
Could not lookup internet adress for x1-6-00-04-5a-8c-e4-99. This will prevent GNOME from operating correctly. It may be possible to correct the problem by adding x1-6-00-04-5a-8c-e4-99 to the file /etc/hosts
I added it to the hosts file so it now looks like this:
# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.              localhost.localdomain localhost
but I still get the error message...How do I fix this?
