Whats this Lie-nix Thing?

I have Red Hat 9.0 with latest upgrades an ECS 755A2 MB, a Trident TGUI9660 VC, an AOC 7GlrA monitor, all which should allow for "1024x768" resolution, but when I change the setting It always rewrites the XF86Config file to "800x600".

So I manually edited the file with VI and forced the "1024x768" parm, but then X windows will not restart and errors.

What do I need to do, download, install, etc. to fix this?

Are you straight from stone age, please consider upgrading to more recent distro for example ubuntu dapper or FC 6. People don't even remember quirks with XFree86, its been deprecated long ago.
