Probably a stupid problem, but I just started using linux yesterday since i found out that windows sucks, and im having a problem.

[root@MSHOME Desktop]# ./jre-1_5_0_09-linux-i586-rpm.bin
bash: ./jre-1_5_0_09-linux-i586-rpm.bin: Permission denied

As you can see, I'm logged in as root, so it shouldn't be a permission problem, right?

The file's executable bits still need to be set regardless of user.
see man pages for chmod for details

chmod 777 jre-1_5_0_09-linux-i586-rpm.bin
sets rwx permissions for all users.

To see permissions
ls -l jre-1_5_0_09-linux-i586-rpm.bin
