Whats this Lie-nix Thing?

hey, i just installed linux and i'm a newbie. but what i did was try to change the permissions of the etc file and now i can't log into the manage users GUI. i get this error when i try:

Cannot lock user lib, file /etc/ptmp or etc/gtmp exist

please help someone...anyone.

Please tell us which linux distribution you're using..
And what exactly you did to change the permissions..

You may try to delete those files after making a backup of them..(so that we can restore them in case of any big problem)
cp /etc/[pg]tmp ~/
rm /etc/[pg]tmp

Now it should work fine..
