Whats this Lie-nix Thing?

I just installed fedorecore 5 on my laptop. And it irratates the crap outta me that I cant bump my res above 8x6. Using my windows logic, I downloaded the linux driver from nvidia. When i goto install it, it begins the installation and then stops. Saying I need to disable the x server, to continue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Press ctrl-alt-F1 and then login as root. Run the command "init 3" to turn off X. You can then "cd /to/path/of/driver" and "./name_of_driver_program" to install
