I'm trying to backup my /home and / directories (both are on a seperate partition).

tar cvzf /backup/home.tar.gz /home

However, it ends (without any errors) when the archive reaches 294M.

df -h shows that /home/ has 3GB of data.

When I 'tar -zxf home.tar.gz' elsewhere, I get an unexpected end of archive error.

Anyone know what's up with that? smile.gif (I'm not out of space on the partitions I'm backing up to)

Update:

tar cvz /home | rsh root@anothercomputer "gzip -9 >home.tar.gz"

That command works just fine. Still curious why it doesn't work locally.
