right now, if i pop in my knoppix 4.0 live cd, this son of a gun finds everything on my winxp laptop....wireless card, boom, up and running on the net, hard drive, boom, no problem, usb drive, again, bada-bing, up and running...

but, my question, i have a spare pc, if i take that one and clear the hd and put a regular partition on there (non ntfs) and install knoppix, plug in my mn 520 usb wireless network adaptor, will knoppix find it then?

i can understand if finding it right now, because my win xp has the ms driver installed, and that is done via a standard windows installer program, but with a hd with just the partition for the linux, how will knoppix know what i have as a wireless network adaptor? or any adaptor that i plug into it, or am i way off base here?

I imagine that the Knoppix install program will handle formatting of paritions for you (like it will have done on your laptop, since you cant install Linux on FAT or NTFS).

Hardware support is always a bit hit and miss, your card might work with no tweaking at all. Or, you might need to fiddle with programs like "ndiswrapper" to make it work. If the base-station supports the WiFi standards, then it should connect to any other device which obeys the standards.

the knoppix was a live cd and ran from the cd, so it didnt need to install...
and i know there is an install program on the cd, i just have to make sure i have the blank hardrive, i.e no partitions set up and let the disk do it...

im very pleased with how fast it ran on my laptop...

i usually spend part of my evening at www.distrowatch.com for the latest linux releases and have downloaded about a dozen to test them out.....

i think i just downloaded the live cd version of gnome 2.3, and it seems to load quite well, and then just sits near the end as it scrolls thru the modules it is loading and never gets to the desktop...not sure what is wrong with that one...

dsl 2.0 is nice, but again, in order to save items, they require a linux partition.....so, i will keep you up to date on how the install goes....

thanx again for all your help.
