I'm having trouble with the cut command and the man page is a bit sparse.

i have a file with the line
cdog 16337 16280 0 17:22 pts/65 00:00:00 grep ssh -2Tqax

and i'm trying to cut out just the time (00:00:00).

whew! i got it. i guess this wasnt about the cut command after.
awk is kinda hard:
cat file |awk '{ print $7 }'

sorry for the bother!

Thanks for posting your reply, awk is definitly a useful program especially for filtering certain aspects of output as you were looking for.
