I'v been having BIG problems tiring to compile programs. whenever i try i always get a error. i haven't had one successfully one yet heres an example.

  • [eanw@Shaw objdir]$ ./configure
    loading cache ./config.cache
    checking host system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
    checking target system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
    checking build system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
    checking for a BSD compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
    checking whether ln works... yes
    checking whether ln -s works... yes
    configure: error: Building in the source directory is not supported in this release.


my distro is mandrake 10.2.

one more example



  • [eanw@Shaw tux_aqfh-1.0.14]$ ./configure
    loading cache ./config.cache
    checking for a BSD compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
    checking whether build environment is sane... yes
    checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... yes
    checking for working aclocal... missing

    configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH

Make sure you have all the development tools installed. The first error is caused by that specific piece of software though.

I usually ensure i have at least the following before compiling software:

autoconf
automake
make
m4
libtool
gcc
g++

Of course, different software will require different libraries, etc. It always helps to check out the INSTALL or README files that come with the software.
