Okay so I need some help. I just compiled the kernel and copied the bzImage into the /boot sector. When I try to boot my new kernel I get a kernel panic init.

Obviously when you compiled your kernel, you made a mistake. (Didn't provide support for IDE, or didn't provide support for your FS... something along those lines).

Did you use the .config file that came with your working kernel?

Try that.

You've given me no information, I can't give you any further advice.
