Hello. I cannot get bittorrent to work. Hopefully this is an OK place to say something like this.

I just got finished erasing Windoxs XP and installing a brand-spanking new version of RedHat 9 on my Dell 300m laptop. It was my first Linux install ever, and so far it's gone fairly smooth; I've managed to get my ethernet drivers installed, after a few bumps. Got most of my setup set up, and my terminal looking good but I cannot for the life of me get bittorrent to work right.

It's driving me up the wall.

I downloaded the latest RPM from www.bittorrent.com: BitTorrent-4.0.4-1.noarch.rpm
Then I ran the command:
$ rpm -Uvh BitTorrent-4.0.4-1.noarch.rpm
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
1:BitTorrent ########################################### [100%]
$
This seemed to work fine; i.e., there were no warnings. So next I tried to use the program thusly:
$ btdownloadheadless.py http://torrent.dulug.duke.edu/torrents/ste...vd-i386.torrent
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/btdownloadheadless.py", line 24, in ?
from BitTorrent.download import Feedback, Multitorrent
ImportError: No module named BitTorrent.download

So at this point I ran into trouble, and began these hours of trials and unhappy toil.
I googled the error and eventually found my way to this place:
http://www.pclinuxonline.com/modules.php?m...c=1093&forum=18

Where this Texstar dude has a pretty clear explanation of how to put things together. I tried downloading the packages he lists on the site:
# libwxPythonGTK2.4-2.4.0.6-1mdk.i586.rpm
# wxPythonGTK-2.4.0.6-1mdk.i586.rpm
# bittorrent-3.2.1b-1mdk.noarch.rpm
# bittorrent-gui-3.2.1b-1mdk.noarch.rpm

And upon rpm installing all of these dudes, ran into new problems resulting from the fact that the versions for python, wxPython, and bittorrent don't match what I already have on my system (but none of it worked before anyway), there were dependency problems etc. etc. etc...

I started to pull some of my hair out.

Then I thought, well, just start over from the beginning Joe. I tried uninstalling all these rpms, with rpm -e, but:
$ rpm -e BitTorrent-4.0.4-1.noarch.rpm
error: package BitTorrent-4.0.4-1.noarch.rpm is not installed

So that was a bust too. Tried installing them again with this:
$ rpm -Uvh BitTorrent-4.0.4-1.noarch.rpm
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
package BitTorrent-4.0.4-1 is already installed

I pulled out some more hair.

Drrrrr.

Admittedly, I'm a novice in this department, but this has turned out to be absurdly difficult. I'm thinking about starting everything over from the absolute beginning; reinstalling the OS. Just for the hell of it.

Before I do that though, thought I'd ask for some help so I googled 'linux help' and here I am.

p.s. The FAQ etc. on the actual BitTorrent.com page was totally useless.

I suggest you try Azureus.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/azureus

It explains very well how to install it, and it's quite easy. =)

Nice GUI, too.
