Ok have a 80 gig plugin in drive

partition between 50 gig and 30 gig

am looking to create a linux environment on the 30 gig partition

main drive is windows XP with SP2

What would be a good linux package to use and get sorted

bearing in mind i have not got a gr8 deal of exposure to Linux

A basic guide and some helpful tips would be nice

Mandriva or Fedora are good for beginners. I've heard ubuntu is good too.

linux uses multiple partitions and its own filesystem so its best to leave unallocated i.e. free disk space and let the installer automatically partition and format.

There are also many different live CD versions like Knoppix where you can experience linux without installing anything to the hard drive.
