I need to swap files between Linux and SuSE. Can I just hook the two machines up to each other? Or do I need an existing network? This probably isn't the best place to go in to it, but if someone could point me to the right information, I'd be grateful.

You have a couple of options. The easiest way is to hook them together using a cross-over ethernet cable, and then place both computers on the same subnet. Other then that, you can plug both into a router/hub or even try some other method like a serial connection, but, most people don't have the hardware for that. So, i would say, find yourself an ethernet cable, and make a crossover out of it (or borrow a crossover from a friend).
