My LAN has a Linux server, all clients are windows98 or XP. I have tried for 2 weeks to get all the settings right via SWAT. I am able to see the Linux server on the windows network neighborhood, but cannot access any shares. I can't even get the printer to share. Does anyone know what to do?

I set up a folder in the /home directory as Shared and the printer as shared. Let me doublecheck the passwords. And thank you for the tip...I'll let you know if it worked.

Ok, I put all the users and their passwords in the smbpasswd file. All shared files and the printer is setup in the smb.conf file. The printer is set up using cups, but I have foomatic running too.
I can still see the Samba server on Network Neighborhood, but when I double-click on it I get the message "//Samba is not accessable. You might not have permission to use this network resource." The printer shows up as ready, but I get the message "Document failed to print." when I attempt to print anything from the Windows machines. Please someone, tell me what am I missing here?

OK, I have installed Mandrake 9.1. A lot of little bugs were fixed in this distro. I went through SWAT again and just did a basic setup and added users and passwords. Then I realized my trouble all along was that I hadn't set shorewall to allow CUPS and FTP. D'OH!!!
Now my trouble is with the WinXP client. It's NIC is setup for auto IP (DHCP). For some reason, It selects an IP and subnet that is way out of range of the rest of the network. I hate XP, but my wife likes it so I have to live with it. wink.gif
