Whats this Lie-nix Thing?

I am trying to install java in order to play yahoo games, I follow the directions at javas site when I type in cd/ the directory it give me a message no such file or directory, when so i just put cd first then i put the directory /tmp/java and it says there is such a directory, but when i do the following that they tell me:
Change the permission of the file you downloaded to be executable. Type:
chmod a+x jre-1_5_0-linux-i586.bin
Verify that you have permission to execute the file. Type:
ls -l

it says no such command. I really want to play yahoo games pls help

After setting the mode with chmod, you should be able to execute it with:
