I just inherited an old 15" Dell monitor and hooked it up. The light is green and it is hooked up correctly however it is just a black screen.

I am running Red Hat ES on 750 mhz 512mb RAM. I haven't the first clue how to setup another monitor. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you adding the monitor as a second screen, or to replace your current monitor? Can you see anything while the system boots?
