Hello. I'm shig. A Japanese University student.

I tried to compile linux kernel for the first time. I successed to build the new kernel. I installed the lilo boot loader and restarted the sysytem. Then the trouble happened.
(I tried the grub boot loader but the result was same.)

---------------------------------------
(Power ON)
(I chose the new kernel)

.................
BIOS data check successful

(silence)
(!!!reboot!!!)
---------------------------------------

I did commands listed below during the compiling...
#cd /usr/src/linux-2.4.31
#make menuconfig
#make dep
#make clean
#make bzImage
#make install
#make modules
#make modules_install
#mkinitrd /boot/linux-2.4.31.img 2.4.3

I successed to carry out these commands.

I can boot up the older kernel but I cannot the new one. What should I do?

When you say software reset, what exactly do you mean? Does the system just reboot (ie show the BIOS/POST screen)?
