Hi all.

I am new to this board but thanks to info posted here I have installed linux on my laptop for the first time!!!

I have a HP Compaq nx9030. I messed with the partitions using Partition magic. 500MB at the start for a boot loader, then windows NTFS partition, 10GB linunx, then 1GB linux swap.

The intallation went fine, GRUB works fine, but.........

When I try toload linux it goes through the boot sequence then halts at something like "PCI IDE cannot load" or summat similar!?!

I think there is a IRQ clash??? I dunno????

If anyone can help a total linux virgin, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

A more detailed explanation of the boot messages are:

"Your CPU does not have a local APIC"

..........Etc............

"PCI: Device 00:1f.1 not availiable because of resource collisions"
linux then halts and does not load anything else

PLEASEEEE can someone point me in the direction of where to start to solve this problem. Or even try to explain what these errors mean.

Thanks

Does it boot using Lilo or Grub? If its using grub, jsut press "e" and then add "noapic" to teh end of the kernel boot line. That might fix it.

Not sure what to to do if you're using Lilo.

hi DS2K3

I amusing GRUB. i tried the noapic command, no luck.

Could it have anthin to do with me using partition magic to configure the partition as ex2? i did format it again with disk druid durin the installation.

Also, as im a complete noob, does the boot for linux go in the ex2 partition. Linux does appear in the grub menu of course.

I read something about disabling the firewire during install, but the installation went fine.

I was thinking about trying to install on my sony pcg-c1xn, but external CDrom makes it too much for me.

A other suggestions? Ps what does the noapic command do?

Thanks for your help.
