I've installed GRUB and it hasn't gotten past Stage 1.5. Here's my menu.lst:
gfxmenu (h1,0)/boot/grub/message
color white/green black/light-gray
default 0
timeout 5

title GNU/Linux Slackware Kernel 2.6.10
       root (hd1,0)
       kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hdb1 reiserfs

title Windows XP Professional SP2
       rootnoverify (hd0,0)
       chainloader +1
I'm wondering if it's a problem with my message file. Can anyone see why it won't boot?

if this is a direct copy/paste from your config file, then the problem is on the first line:

gfxmenu (h1,0)/boot/grub/message

You're missing the 'd' in the drive:

gfxmenu (hd1,0)/boot/grub/message

Try that and see if it works.
