I am having some problems getting cron to launch an external application, i.e. Totem, Amarok, MPlayer. I realize this might be a security feature of some sort, but I couldnt find any documentation stating whether that was the case or not, and I know I am doing it correctly, because I can get cron to write to files with the echo command, etc. Actually, using the absolute path to MPlayer, I've gotten it to play about 5 seconds of the song, and then it shuts off. Can someone tell me if this is able to be fixed, why it's only playing a few seconds and stopping, and a possible workaround? Thanks in advance

Nik

CRON might impose a time limit on processes. You could always ask CRON to run a shell script which in turn forks a copy of the program.

eg, to fork a copy of mplayer, use:

mplayer &> /dev/null &
