I have a HP Pavilion xf145 / ze1000 laptop. all I can get is 800x600 res. and my screen is small. I am a recovering Microsoft addict ;-) MCSE NT/200/XP learning linux. I am having trouble with the xserver with different configs. when I probe video card it gives a generic vesa driver and will not find my 14" lcd display. please help. thanks oh, I am running Red Hat 8

currently, using vesa driver i am getting a display of 1024x768
and a color depth of 16p.better u select the video card urself and adjust the video memory coz video ram is very important for frame buffer drivers.
keep it at 8mb.then i think that redhat should determine the sync range of your monitor but that too u can enter manually.then select the res yourself and test whether it works or not.
oh...first of all enter the command
this will solve ur problem.....
