I am relatively new to mandrake.. I did a scan of my box using nmap.. and found lots of ports open I do not want/need, but I am not finding what file to edit to kill these ports. I thought it was init.d or something like that.. but no luck there. where should I be looking to shutdown some of these ports/services? mandrake 10.1 system.

thanks

You will ahve to find the service that opens the port. A lot of these might be due to xinetd, which is configured from /etc/xinetd.d

If you post the specific ports here, then maybe we can work out whats opeining them. Keep in mind that Mandrake has an excellent config suite, and most can probably closed using system -> services
