Looking for Linux consultant in Chicago Area

Linux guru (or semi guru) needed for a small project, and will pay at hourly rate or package rate.

Hello. I have a strong knowledge of DOS through Windows XP PRO and even WinPE and BartPE rigs. Linux unfortunately is new for me. However, I think I need to hire some help. I have a small project that is above my current ability and time constraints.

If you work in the Chicago are, or are willing to commute. Please send me an email at linuxhelp*REMOVE*@gopostal.org Please remove the “*REMOVE*” in the address as it was added to reduce spam.

The basics of the project are as follows (this is a brief):

I am attempting to create a linux file server that will run SAMBA and thus can be accessed from my local Windows network. The server needs the following specs:

1) Running in a small form factor case (SFF) with 3.5” x 4 drives (Shuttle Systems XPC SB95P V2) since it has 4 SATA headers and may run in RAID 0 mode.
2) The operating system must boot from a compact flash card via an IDE interface (due to the lack of any other space for a drive).
3) We are using Knoppix 3.7, as the ramdisk use significantly cuts down on the write cycles of the compact flash (since it is running in an emulated CD mode) and thus increases the CF card life. Right now, the OS is stored on a 1 GB CF card, but with re-mastering of the initial Knoppix distro, this will need to be cut down immensely. This is a headless system, and thus only needs the run Apache (for SWAT) and Samba in run level 3.

Note: All parts are ready and assembled.

Ok, here is where my limited knowledge of Linux has hit a wall. I am using the 2.6 Kernel in order to support the SATA drives, but I cannot get LILO to boot Linux with the SATA and CF drives in place.

So….

Job to be done:
Remaster Knoppix 3.7 to the smallest size (preferably less thank 64 megs – and yes, Damn Small Linux can be used as well). The unit would need to boot from the CF card and start Apache and SAMBA on bootup. In addition, we need to have SWAT set up so that configurations such as user names, passwords, access levels, domains, and IP settings may be made over the LAN.

I am aware that this is not the largest project on the market, but for you gurus, you can make some quick cash. I only ask that you help explain the settings to myself so that I can make SMALL adjustments and SMALL repairs later.

At any rate, please contact me at the email address above if you are interested, and we can discuss payment and the time schedule.

Thank you for your time, and I apologize in advance if this was posted to the wrong forum/site.

Pay for a holiday to Chicago and I will learn how to do that biggrin.gif

Only I think it would be cheaper to buy a proper IBM server...
