Hello all, I cant tell you how much of a relief it was to find this forum.
I am extremely new to the linux OS. I had some left over parts lying around and decided to put together a Linux PC. I installed Mandrake Linux 9.0. Everything seemed to install & configure itself nicely. But a couple of things are troubling me. First up, I cant seem to gain access to the internet via my Lan Port, router and cable modem. I also tried installing linux on another pc with just a dial up modem and could not make it work there either. I read on Mandrake's site that I need to edit this line "/etc/sysconfig/network" and or the "/etc/ppp/options" and remove the gateway entry but I have not been able to do this. I logged in as root but I dont have a clue about what to do from there. nothing I've tried works, It said permission declined.

Basicly, can somebody walk me through in detail the steps I need to take to gain internet access via Lan card and via modem

And briefly explain how to edit files using the root termnal window.

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED, Thanks very much in advance.

Ken
