There are many alternatives out there for either of those purposes, however, i will give you my suggestions:

K3B - A beautiful and easy to use graphical cd/dvd burning program. I would have to say that this is the most popular one out there right now, and for good reason. This is almost definitly what you're looking for.

AMSN - A great MSN chatting program for Linux, Macintosh and Windows. It does it's best to include all functionality of the MSN Messenger Windows client. The only thing that this doesn't support (other than the stupid msn7 features) is video-chat, but as far as i know, no app for linux does that right now (maybe gnomemeeting, not sure).

As a side suggestion, you may want to check out GAIM for a mutli-protocol instant messanging program (yahoo, icq, msn, irc, etc.). As well, if you already have kde installed, you may already have Kopete which is a nifty little multi-protocol im program that is definitly worth checking out.
