I take it you mean the one that manages usernames and passwords?

Well, if you only need to validateb logins from *NIX clients, then use NIS (or "yellow pages"). Isntall the yp* packes, which are quite common and should be in your distro.

Webmin (www.webmin.com) has a nice interface for config'ing it

No for windows clients to use linux to verify user/pass out of the passwd file.
