Ok heres the problem

My dad was set up as root I guess and well he does not use Linux all that much, so he forgot the password. Is there any way I can reset the password or even put me as root?

Do you think i might have to take it out and load it all back in again?

thanks for your help

Hi,

when your distro boots up there (don't know which u use) there should be a option ... whit grub and lilo as well like type help, or linux init 1 ... or init 1 something

just go to init 1 (single user mode)

it will login you to root without the password asking thingie

then type

passwd *new_password*
type the same *new_password* again

reboot
and that's that

if you are using redhat with lilo type :
linux single

if you are using redhat with grub type :
Select Red Hat Linux with the version of the kernel that you wish to boot and type e for edit. You will be presented with a list of items in the configuration file for the title you just selected.

Select the line that starts with kernel and type e to edit the line.

Go to the end of the line and type single as a separate word (press the [Spacebar] and then type single). Press [Enter] to exit edit mode.

Back at the GRUB screen, type b to boot into single user mode.

Sincerely
Robert B
